Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Gregory Domingo said the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry is expected to gain 100,000 additional jobs this year. Outsourcing jobs at year-end 2013 were pegged at 900,000, therefore BPO jobs in the Philippines are expected to reach the million mark by the end of 2014.
Both Domingo and Information Technology and Business Processing Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) president Jose Mari Mercado aren’t worried about US President Barack Obama’s recent State of the Union address where he exhorted US firms to repatriate overseas jobs. Mercado said that there are 140,000 vacant BPO jobs this year. Moreover, European countries, Australia, New Zealand and other nations have been looking to outsource to the Philippines. Therefore, the outsourcing industry’s challenge is to maintain competitiveness by ensuring a well-trained and educated workforce.
